General Torque Guidelines¶
By Bolt Size (General Reference)¶
These are GENERAL guidelines. Always use manufacturer specifications when available.
| Bolt Size | Grade 8.8 | Grade 10.9 |
|---|---|---|
| M8 | 18 ft-lbs | 25 ft-lbs |
| M10 | 35 ft-lbs | 50 ft-lbs |
| M12 | 60 ft-lbs | 85 ft-lbs |
| M14 | 95 ft-lbs | 135 ft-lbs |
IMPORTANT: These are approximations. Always defer to OEM specifications.
Notes & Best Practices¶
- Clean Threads: Always clean bolt threads and holes before installation
- Anti-Seize: Use anti-seize on most fasteners except:
- Suspension bushings (can cause slippage)
- Loctite-designated fasteners
- Brake components
- Cotter Pins: Never back off a nut to align cotter pin holes - only tighten
- Torque Pattern: Always torque multi-bolt components in a star/cross pattern
- Re-torque: Consider re-torquing critical fasteners after 50-100 miles
- New Hardware: Replace single-use fasteners (stretch bolts, lock nuts, etc.)
